360° UAV Flight in a collapse test setup at the German Resuce Robotik Center
This paper presents a novel approach to build consistent 3D maps for multi robot cooperation in USAR environments. The sensor streams from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and ground robots (UGV) are fused in one consistent map. The UAV camera data are used to generate 3D point clouds that are fused with the 3D point clouds generated by a rolling 2D laser scanner at the UGV. The registration method is based on the matching of corresponding planar segments that are extracted from the point clouds. Based on the registration, an approach for a globally optimized localization is presented. Apart from the structural information of the point clouds, it is important to mention that no further information is required for the localization. Two examples show the performance of the overall registration.
The two churches, San Francesco and Sant'Agostino in Amatrice, Italy was hit by an earthquake on August 24 2016. Both churches are in a state of partial collapse, in need of shoring to prevent potential further destruction and to preserve the national heritage. The video show the mission at 1.Sept.2016 in clips of 10 seconds.
The TRADR project was asked by the Italian firebrigade Vigili del Fuoco to provide 3D textured models of two churches.
The team entered San Francesco with two UGVs (ground robots) and one UAV (drone, flown by Prof. Surmann), teleoperating them entirely out of line of sight and partially in collaboration. We entered Sant'Agostino with one UAV (also flown by Prof. Surmann) while two other UAVs were providing a view from different angles to facilitate maneuvering them entirely out of line of sight.
Venice 2018: Tradr Review
(2018)
The video shows an orthopoto and a textured 3D model of the location. 300 images were recorded in two short flights with a Mavic Pro in 50 meter height. The first one was a single grid while the camera facing down and the second one was a double grid facing the camera at an 60 degree angle. The 3D model is computed with OpenDroneMap.
This video shows a model computed from 124 images taken at the Tjex 2015 of the trade project (www.tradr-project.eu). The images were acquired by walking around the object and reconstruct the structure with VisualSfm software.
This video shows a model computed from 320 images taken at the Tjex 2015 of the trade project (www.tradr-project.eu). The images were acquired with a falcan 8 drone (AscTec) and reconstruct the structure with VisualSfm software. The flight was in 150 m. The Tower is about 95 meter high.
The video shows a snapshot of a 16 minute flight of a DJI Phantom 3 professional over the Schloss Birlinghoven at Sankt Augustin, Germany. The castle is located at the Fraunhofer Campus at Sankt Augustin. The 3D model is generated out of 400 key frames of the 4k video which are cut out with ffmpeg. The work is part of an evaluation in the Tradr Project (www.tradr-project.eu)
Challenging visual localization of an UAV while flying out of a room into a snowy environment (~ 4:50). The UAV is equipped with a 360° camera. The localization is done with OpenVSLAM.
The video was recorded in Jan. 2019 at the Fire Brigade training center in Dortmund
To achieve nearly real time conditions the original resolution of 5k (30 fps) was reduced to 2k (ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -vf scale=1920:-1 -crf 25 vido-small.mp4) with high compression (-crf 25). This reduce the original size from 3.2 GB to 93MB (~ 4 MBit/s which could be transmitted online via a radio link). The localization shown did not use frameskip. With a frameskip above 1 the localization fails while the UAV is flying through the window. Indoor localization can be done with a frameskip of 3 in real time.

At the beginning of the pandemic in Feb. 2020 I had a little time and wanted to do something new i.e. bring my 3D printer, AI and computer science together somehow. The result is a printed portrait with a lot of computer science. Using style transfer I transferred the etching style of a Göthe portrait to a young girl I call Carolin. By means of image processing I made a black and white picture out of it. Then, using the problem of the traveling salesman, each black point in the picture is interpreted as a city and the whole picture is drawn by only one line. Since this line is very long, it is optimized and shortened by a so-called simulated annealing algorithm. The result is printed in 5 layers on a 3D printer.

Nowadays, robots are found in a growing number of areas where they collaborate closely with humans. Enabled by lightweight materials and safety sensors, these cobots are gaining increasing popularity in domestic care, where they support people with physical impairments in their everyday lives. However, when cobots perform actions autonomously, it remains challenging for human collaborators to understand and predict their behavior, which is crucial for achieving trust and user acceptance. One significant aspect of predicting cobot behavior is understanding their perception and comprehending how they “see” the world. To tackle this challenge, we compared three different visualization techniques for Spatial Augmented Reality. All of these communicate cobot perception by visually indicating which objects in the cobot’s surrounding have been identified by their sensors. We compared the well-established visualizations Wedge and Halo against our proposed visualization Line in a remote user experiment with participants suffering from physical impairments. In a second remote experiment, we validated these findings with a broader non-specific user base. Our findings show that Line, a lower complexity visualization, results in significantly faster reaction times compared to Halo, and lower task load compared to both Wedge and Halo. Overall, users prefer Line as a more straightforward visualization. In Spatial Augmented Reality, with its known disadvantage of limited projection area size, established off-screen visualizations are not effective in communicating cobot perception and Line presents an easy-to-understand alternative.
Recommendations for the Development of a Robotic Drinking and Eating Aid - An Ethnographic Study
(2021)
Being able to live independently and self-determined in one’s own home is a crucial factor or human dignity and preservation of self-worth. For people with severe physical impairments who cannot use their limbs for every day tasks, living in their own home is only possible with assistance from others. The inability to move arms and hands makes it hard to take care of oneself, e.g. drinking and eating independently. In this paper, we investigate how 15 participants with disabilities consume food and drinks. We report on interviews, participatory observations, and analyzed the aids they currently use. Based on our findings, we derive a set of recommendations that supports researchers and practitioners in designing future robotic drinking and eating aids for people with disabilities.
Background: Priority during the SARS-CoV2 pandemic is that employees need to be protected from infection risks and business activities need to be ensured. New virus variants with increased infection risks require an evolved risk strategy.

The video shows a very high resolution 3D point cloud !!! of the outdoor area of the German Rescue Robotics Center. For the recording, a 25-second POI flight was performed with a Mavic 3. From the 4K video footage captured during this flight, 77 images were cropped and localized within 4 minutes using colmap and processed using Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF). The nerfacto model of Nerfstudio was trained on an Nvidia RTX 4090 for 8 minutes. In summary, a top 3D model is available to task forces after about 13 minutes. The calculation is performed locally on site by the RobLW of the DRZ. The video shown here shows a free camera path rendered at 60 hz (Full HD).
Nerf(acto) for the 3D modeling of the Computer Science building of Westfälische Hochschule GE
(2023)
The video shows a very high resolution 3D point cloud !!! of the computer science building of the University of Applied Science Gelsenkirchen. For the recording a 3 minute flight with a M30T was performed. The 105 images taken by the wide-angle camera during this flight were localized within 3 minutes using colmap and processed using Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF). The nerfacto model of Nerfstudio was trained on an Nvidia RTX 4090 for 8 minutes. Thus, a top 3D model is available after about 15 minutes.
The video shown here shows a free camera path rendered at 60 hz (Full HD).
From the 360° images of the former video (
• German rescue robotic center captured... ) we now generate the 3D point cloud. The UAV needs 3 minutes to capture the outdoor scenario and the hall from inside and outside. The 3D point cloud generation is 5x slower than the video. It uses a VSLAM algorithm to localize the k-frames (green) and with 3 k-frames it use a 360° PatchMatch algorithm implemented at a NVIDIA graphic card (CUDA) to calculated the dense point clouds. The hall ist about 70 x 20 meters.
The video shows the first test of a small spherical UAV (35 cm) with 4 rotors for missions in complex environments such as buildings, caves or tunnels. The spherical design protects the vehicle's internal components and allows the UAV to roll over the ground when the environment allows. The drone can land and take off in any position and come into contact with objects without endangering the propellers and can restart even after crashes.

(2023)
This video highlights a recent flight test carried out in our cutting-edge robotics lab, unveiling the capabilities of our meticulously crafted thermal and 360° camera drone! We've ingeniously upgraded a DJI Avata with a bespoke thermal and 360° camera system. Compact yet powerful, measuring just 18 x 18 x 17 cm, this drone is strategically engineered to effortlessly navigate and deliver crucial thermal and 360° insights concurrently in post-fire or post-explosion environments.
The integration of a specialized thermal and 360° camera system enables the simultaneous capture of both data sources during a single flight. This groundbreaking approach not only reduces inspection time by half but also facilitates the seamless superimposition of thermal and 360° videos for comprehensive analysis and interpretation.
At the integration sprint of the E-DRZ consortium in march 2023 we improve the information captured by the human spotter (of the fire brigade) by extending him through a 360° drone i.e. the DJI Avata with an Insta360 on top of it. The UAV needs 3 minutes to capture the outdoor scenario and the hall from inside and outside. The hall ist about 70 x 20 meters. When the drone is landed we have all information in 360° degree at 5.7k as you can see it in the video. Furthermore it is a perfect documentation of the deployment scenario. In the next video we will show how to spatial localize the 360° video and how to generate a 3D point cloud from it.

The dataset is used for 3D environment modeling, i.e. for the generation of dense 3D point clouds and 3D models with PatchMatch algorithm and neural networks. Difficult for the modeling algorithm are the reflections of rain, water and snow, as well as windows and vehicle surface. In addition, lighting conditions are constantly changing.
Problem
- How to effectively use aerial robots to support rescue forces?
- How to achieve good flight characteristics and long flight times?
- How to enable simple and intuitive control?
- How to efficiently record image data of the environment?
- How to generate flight and image data for rescue forces?
Implementation:
The flying robot was designed in Autodesk Fusion360. In order to achieve high stability as well as low weight, the frame was milled from carbon. Mounts such as for GPS and 360° camera were 3D printed. A special feature is that the flying robot is not visible in the panoramic view of the 360° camera. The flight controller of the robot was set up using Ardupilot. The communication with the robot is done via MAVLink (UDP).To support different platforms, a software was realized as a web application. The front end was created using HTML, CSS and Javascript.
The back end is based on Flask-Socket-IO (Python). For the intelligent recognition of motor vehicles a micro controller with an integrated camera is used. For the post-processing of flight and video data a pipeline was implemented for automation.
Problem: A group of robots, called a swarm, is placed in an unknown environment and is supposed to explore it independently. The goal of the exploration is the creation of a common map.
Implementation
- Equipping six Kobuki robots with appropriate sensor technology, a large battery, a router and the Jetson board
- Setup of the Jetson-Boards with self-made ROS2 nodes and the set up mesh network
- Writing of launch files for the common start of all functions
- Reinforcement learning is used to train an AI that controls the swarm by selecting points for the robots to approach and navigating to them and navigating them there.
- Setting up a responsive website using Angular and the Bootstrap
Framework.
Background: Emotions play a central role in mental disorder and especially in depression. They are sensed in the body, and it has recently been shown in healthy participants that these sensations can be differentiated between emotions. The aim of the current study was to assess bodily sensations for basic emotions induced by emotion eliciting pictures in depression.
Methods: 30 healthy controls (HC), 30 individuals suffering from Major depressive disorder (MDD) without medication use (MDDnm) and 30 individuals with MDD with medication use (MDDm) were shown emotional and neutral pictures and were asked to paint areas in an empty body silhouette where they felt an increase or decrease in activation. Body sensation maps were then calculated and statistical pattern recognition applied.
Results Results indicated statistically separable activation patterns for all three groups. MDDnm showed less overall activation than HCs, especially in sadness and fear, while MDDm showed stronger deactivation for all emotions than the other two groups.
Conclusions: We could show that emotion experience was associated with bodily sensations that are weaker in depression than in healthy controls and that antidepressant medication was correlated with an increased feeling of bodily deactivation.
Results give insights into the relevance for clinicians to acknowledge bodily sensations in the treatment of depression.
Robot arms are one of many assistive technologies used by people with motor impairments. Assistive robot arms can allow people to perform activities of daily living (ADL) involving grasping and manipulating objects in their environment without the assistance of caregivers. Suitable input devices (e.g., joysticks) mostly have two Degrees of Freedom (DoF), while most assistive robot arms have six or more. This results in time-consuming and cognitively demanding mode switches to change the mapping of DoFs to control the robot. One option to decrease the difficulty of controlling a high-DoF assistive robot arm using a low-DoF input device is to assign different combinations of movement-DoFs to the device’s input DoFs depending on the current situation (adaptive control). To explore this method of control, we designed two adaptive control methods for a realistic virtual 3D environment. We evaluated our methods against a commonly used non-adaptive control method that requires the user to switch controls manually. This was conducted in a simulated remote study that used Virtual Reality and involved 39 non-disabled participants. Our results show that the number of mode switches necessary to complete a simple pick-and-place task decreases significantl when using an adaptive control type. In contrast, the task completion time and workload stay the same. A thematic analysis of qualitative feedback of our participants suggests that a longer period of training could further improve the performance of adaptive control methods.
Nachdem die Fachgruppe Medieninformatik (FG MI) der Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. The disruptive nature of the changing media landscape and technology-driven advances in communication have led to innovative ways of organizing work in the information and communication industry. This reorganization of work is reflected in the concept of New Work, which rethinks working concepts, styles, and employee behavior. Based on a survey among staff in the information and communication industry (n = 380), this study investigates the status quo of the implementation of New Work measures and their effectiveness in helping companies reach organizational goals. The results show that New Work measures are widely adopted although there is still unused potential. Moreover, the study demonstrates that the implementation of New Work measures supports companies in achieving New Work goals as well as overall organizational goals in the contexts of agile management, change management, internal communication, and evaluation.
The article highlights gender codes in design, particularly in web design, by means of current examples. Different aspects of gender-specific design are looked at in detail and their inherent problems discussed: on the one hand the development of a special solution (gender-specific for women), on the other hand, web design with reduced functionality and simplification of information (i.e. image representation) which sometimes even leads to a negation of technology. The article illustrates that gender codes and stereotypical role models can be embodied on different design levels of web design (use and artefact): in structure/navigation, in creative elements by the use of shape, colour and imagery and on a textual level. These design decisions have an impact on the power of users to act, their individual gender identity and the structural gender identity/social perception of gender. The article demonstrates that gender codes in current web design are very present and aims to sensitize the topic.
